Locally Owned and Operated
Carrying a Proud Heritage Since 1909

Arfstrom Pharmacy is a locally owned and operated business with our headquarters located on Ashmun Street in Downtown Sault Ste. Marie where a locally owned pharmacy first opened over a century ago. This location holds a tremendous history for our independent pharmacy.

For over 100 years, there has been a pharmacy open on the corner of Ashmun and Spruce Streets, beginning with Maltas Drug in March 1909. Though the name and ownership of the pharmacy has changed over the years, the quality of service and dedication to our customers and our community has stayed the same. Being locally owned and operated ensures that we strive towards the best for our communities, our friends and our neighbors. We invest in the growth of our communities by providing superior health care services and employment opportunities for current and future generations.

Meeting a Variety of Needs in the Community

Over the years, various businesses have come and gone under the Arfstrom Pharmacy umbrella, including three Arfstrom Pharmacy locations in Sault Ste. Marie, Kincheloe and Cedarville; Arfstrom Medical Equipment & Supplies; Sault Community Pharmacy; Great Lakes Art Gallery; Arfstrom Camera & Photo; The Frozen North; The Hub; Safe Harbor Books; Austin's Pipe & Tobacco; and Austin's Oak.

Some of our business ventures started at 415 Ashmun Street and were relocated to other, larger spaces in downtown Sault Ste. Marie and Cedarville. Some are still in business today, some under new ownership; sadly, others have closed due to challenging economic times.

Arfstrom Medical Equipment & Supplies grew rapidly throughout the mid-1970s and 1980s — so rapidly that it needed its own space and is now located next door to Arfstrom Pharmacy in Sault Ste. Marie at 409 Ashmun Street.

The Hub, which was named after the building in which it originally opened in on Ashmun Street, carries a full line of medical uniforms and is currently located in the Sault Heritage Building inside Sault Community Pharmacy on Osborn Boulevard in Sault Ste. Marie.

Austin’s Pipe & Tobacco has multiple owners since its origination under Arfstrom Pharmacy. It is still locally owned and operated at 539 Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

We invite you to visit your nearest Arfstrom Pharmacy for all your  prescriptions, OTC medications, and medical supplies. Most of our locations carry greeting cards, gifts, and other important items. Stop in today for the best in local pharmacy services.
Arfstrom Pharmacy is such a lovely family-owned pharmacy. Being from a very big city area, I have a lot of bases for comparison. I highly recommend Arfstrom for their excellent customer service. Their techs really keep track of what is going on, often having my prescriptions filled before I have called in to ask. We have also worked with their staff in the medical supply realm as well, who kindly helped us navigate unknown territory. I chose not to transfer my prescriptions to the new big box store for the large discount they offered. Arfstrom has serviced my needs very well, and I preferred not to allow the new big guy on the block to shoulder out their income for even a month. Highly recommended!! Thanks, Arfstrom team.
